Tooth-Colored Composite Fillings
Many materials have been used over the years to treat cavities. Amalgam or silver fillings have been popular for decades, but they can leave a noticeable dark spot on your smile.
Fortunately, today we have access to new and improved materials. At Dahle Family Dentistry, we exclusively use tooth-colored composite resin to create attractive, long-lasting white fillings that blend perfectly with surrounding teeth.
Why Would I Need a Tooth-Colored Filling?
There are several cases where Dr. Daniel Dahle would recommend using composite resin:
- Remove tooth decay
- Restore a chipped or broken tooth
- Improve a tooth's shape or size
- Close gaps and spaces between teeth
- Cover a discolored tooth
The Benefits of Modern Tooth Fillings
Tooth-colored fillings look realistic because they contain materials that mimic the appearance of tooth enamel. Using composite resin, we create fillings in many shades and hues of white to perfectly match the tooth color for an invisible repair.
Another benefit of composite fillings is that we bond the material directly to the tooth structure. This method is healthier than placing amalgam fillings which require us to remove a large portion of the tooth's structure. We can make the repair as small and conservative as possible with composite resin.
What's Involved with Getting a Tooth Filling?
Getting a filling is a straightforward process that we complete in one visit to Dahle Family Dentistry. The process is similar, whether we use the material to treat a cavity or repair a broken tooth.
First, we remove the decay and thoroughly clean the tooth. Next, we apply a liquid to the treatment area that roughens the tooth to help create a secure bond between it and the filling. Composite resin starts out soft, so our dentist can expertly mold and shape it to match the tooth's natural contours. The final step is to harden it to its final strength with a special curing light.
Dr. Daniel checks the tooth and makes adjustments as necessary to ensure the repair looks natural and fits your dental bite comfortably.
How to Care for Your New Filling
Caring for a tooth with a filling is no different than any other tooth, and you will continue to brush and floss as you always have. Our dentist checks your fillings and other restorations during each dental exam to ensure they are in good condition and will continue to provide many years of use.
